“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.”
— Ansel Adams, New Mexico Photographer
The Spanish wandered north into Nuevo México in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Gold before the Mayflower landed. Instead, they found themselves conquered by a land which has a means of purifying the spirit. This elemental forge, this Sipapu, where the flawed soul can sometimes emerge deeply transformed — it is easy to imagine that the richness of this land was not in fact exaggerated, only misunderstood. Later, artists and others have sometimes famously sought to discover what the Ancestral Pueblo people of Chaco Canyon and those at the Pueblos today likely have known for 2000 years.
We will not promise you epiphany or metamorphosis only an opportunity to see and experience a bit of the magic that comes from walking in these places and hearing some of their stories Fun things to do in New Mexico.
“I think New Mexico was the greatest experience from the outside world that I have ever had. It certainly changed me forever. Curious as it may sound, it was New Mexico that liberated me from the present era of civilization, the great era of material and mechanical development.” ― D.H. Lawrence
